Champions League

Real Madrid vs. Tottenham

Finally, one of those magical Champions league nights return to Santiago Bernabeu after 7 years. I have kept an eye on the odds since the quarter-finals draw and saw how the odds dropped all of a sudden after Real Madrid lost to Sporting over the weekend at home by 0-1. I have read some opinions on how Real Madrid will be hurt after this defeat and how they might struggle so much to get past Tottenham. Spanish press likes to talk about the dangers on the wings and the offensive unit in general of the English team and how they might destroy the Real Madrid defense. I believe that the environment at the moment is of great underestimation of Real Madrid and I think that we can take advantage of it. I won’t take any credit away from Sporting for being the team that has ended the incredible winning streak at home of Real Madrid; they did after all play a perfect match following their own guide lines. But the main reason Real Madrid lost last Saturday was the absence of Xabi Alonso in the team. Already in my preview for that match I have warned about the dangers of playing without him, obviously their defeat was a surprise even for me, but the way they struggled wasn’t. Today, Xabi Alonso is back in the team and manager Mourinho will risk Ronaldo and Marcelo. I’ve also read a newspaper say that Mourinho might go defensive this time but why go defensive if they have always succeeded at home with their big stars all out attack line-up? If he was to stay back, than risking Ronaldo and especially Marcelo wouldn’t even make sense. For this match, Mou will line up all his best players available with exception of Benzema who is injured, Adebayor will take his place and if he fails to perform, he has got Higuain on the bench.

Tottenham are one of the surprises in this tournament. They have had a quite amazing Champions league campaign so far, ending first in their group in front of current champs Inter Milan and also knocking out AC Milan in the second round. They even beat AC Milan away 0-1 which was a relatively big surprise. But it’s the eruption of Gareth Bale this season what kept them going. This team is definitely a major threat in the offense with incredibly dangerous players such as Lennon, Modric, Van der Vaart, apart from Bale. But I have read that their defensive line is not precisely a good one and have major problems at times.

So Tottenham have enough players to put Real Madrid’s defense under pressure. But what about Tottenham’s defense? Will they resist Ronaldo, Ozil, Di Maria and co. ? Real Madrid have gained clean sheets in all their matches at home in CL plus they have won all their matches by 2 or more goals(at home). With this line up (and any of the strikers) they have won almost all their home matches this season at by 2 goals or more, only 3 matches have been won with 1 goal difference. After the defeat last Saturday, I think the home team won’t be hurt, they will even double their effort as CL is their best option for successful season after practically losing the league already.

I believe Real Madrid can win this by 2 goals or more. Real Madrid -1. 25 AH @ 1. 92 is my recommendation.
