Spanish League

Malaga vs. Mallorca

Malaga is second last while Mallorca is ninth in the league. I know that I might have sounded a bit too confident of Malaga winning in the past and sometimes it doesn’t happen. But I am convinced that from here to the end of the league they will manage to stay in first division and it’s a personal gamble which I think will work out well(otherwise I wouldn’t share this pick). The task is very difficult but the nearest team who is out of relegation zone is Zaragoza is just three points away plus Getafe has joined this “relegation survival club” just four points away. What I am trying to say is that Malaga has everything in their hand to save themselves, including a much superior squad than the rest of relegation rivals. I have to admit that their last match was a huge disappointment (0-0 against Deportivo at home) but Deportivo played their only card left when one of their players received a red card by sitting back in their own area making things worse for Malaga (yes, red cards for your rival is not always good for you, especially when you need your rival to attack and leave gaps to beat them). A point was not enough and now they have a new chance to win at home against a team not as strong behind as Deportivo. For this match, they will miss Eliseu but will recover “The Beast” Baptista after long term injury. I think that the urgency of a victory will make them focus more than ever especially against a very “beatable” team like Mallorca.

Mallorca is a team that is ninth, six points away from Europa League. But they have absolutely no ambition into cutting down this distance. In fact, all I have read this week from them were just words about how they are finding it difficult to earn the 42 points (they have 39 points) that in theory is needed to be saved from relegation. So basically, this team is just “scratching” points to be saved and since they are not in a real rush to add up these points(considering that there are 7 matches left), I think that they won’t come on to the field with the same energy Malaga will start the match. Mallorca is not exactly the best team around when playing away, having lost to relegation candidates away in the past too(3-3-9 away). For this match, Pereira and De Guzman are doubt. If De Guzman is confirmed out for this match than Mallorca’s small chances of winning here will decrease considerably, that is for sure. Also Japanese Aki who has been playing at a quite high level lately has said that he is not fit to play himself, but he is considered doubtful too.

The difference between Deportivo last week and Mallorca this week is that Depor is a serious relegation candidate and had more reasons to resist Malaga to the end for the draw. Mallorca looks down and sees relegation zone 9 points away and only with home victories they can be saved without too much problem. Malaga on the other hand will play this match as a matter of life or death and definitely have enough quality players to beat the visiting team. I consider them huge favorites to win this match.

I will recommend Malaga victory @ 2. 05
