Spanish Cup Final

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid (will be played at Valencia)

Second "Clasico" in less than a week. The first one took place last Saturday in league and ended 1-1. Real Madrid surprised everyone, not only on the 3 defensive midfielders tactic but also with Pepe being one of them. With this tactic, manager Mourinho had the upper hand over Barcelona and managed to neutralize their rival's game. Barcelona couldn't play like usual and found it hard to even reach Madrid's area. At same time, thanks to an immense Pepe in midfield, Real Madrid were able to intercept the ball easily and create danger on the counter attack. In fact, by half time, the team who had most clear chances was surprisingly the defensive minded Real Madrid. When I saw how well Mou's men played I thought they were going to win it but then a clear penalty in favor of Barcelona and a red card for Madrid's Albiol, ripped apart everything they worked up till then. With Messi scoring the penalty, Real Madrid had an almost impossible task to even draw the match. But with a lot of confidence and motivation, a penalty was called for Real Madrid and Ronaldo scored. At the end, I believe that the moral winner of the match was Real Madrid who in the past years were never as close to beating Barcelona than this last match and if it wasn't for the red (which was a clear one, not saying it wasn't), I think that the score would have been more in favor of Mou's men.

This said, Real Madrid and Barcelona are not expected to introduce big changes. Manager Mourinho, after seeing that his recipe has worked better than Saturday's 1-1 suggests, will repeat it for the final. The only expected change is that they will play with Ozil from the start instead of Benzema. Barcelona on the other hand, will play with same players as always except goalkeeper Valdes who will be replaced by the "cup gk" Pinto.

If formations, lineups and strategies are the same as last Saturday, I don't see the script changing at all and probably will repeat itself. Barcelona lack the improvisation at manager level as they don't know how to play with anything different than their usual 4-3-3 offensive tactic. So if they struggled to reach the area last time, I seriously doubt they will improve this problem this time. Pinto also is not Valdes and with Ronaldo, Di Maria and Ozil on the counter, I really don't think he will be at the level Valdes would offer if he was to start. Real Madrid found a good way to force their rival to struggle in their game but also struggled to attack normally themselves (however their counterattacks and set piece were excellent), this is why Benzema will be replaced by Ozil who will contribute with more creativity. This is a change for good and I think it could solve just a tiny bit their attacking problem using while using this formation.

Barcelona is the big favorite as they have been the big dominant team in Spain and Europe in the last years. Real Madrid for many years lost to Barcelona repeatedly, but I feel that Real Madrid took a huge step in the last Clasico. As I said in that match preview, the first almost meaningless match last Saturday could decide the rest of Clasicos the next few weeks due to its psychological effects which I think benefited Real Madrid more than Barcelona. I believe that Real Madrid are way too underestimated for this final. I expect a tighter match than what the handicap and odds suggests. It's worth a shot IMO.

I recommend Real Madrid +0. 5 AH @ 2. 00
