A quick pick while Melbourne City are still good value.
My price: Melbourne City -0. 75 $2. 00
Winless in their six, Sydney FC are in poor form. While they managed to salvage a point at Melbourne Victory on Saturday, it came at a terrible cost. They lost captain Alex Brosque to hamstring (likely out for the season) and may miss another striker Matt Simon (rib) for the trip to City. In reserve forwards Shane Smeltz and George Blackwood, they are left with a veteran who can't last 90 mins and a youngster yet to score. In addition, Sydney FC will be unable to call upon defenders Jacques Faty, Sebastian Ryall, Rhyan Grant due to suspensions, leaving Matt Jurman as the only first-choice backline. The experienced, ever-versatile wing-back David Carney, who scored the equalizer against Victory, is also suspended.
So 5, possibly 6 first choice players will miss this match and I'm not ruling out further casualties as the Sky Blues play ACL favourites Guangzhou Evergrande midweek. If they come unscathed, fatigue will be an issue as the Melbourne City match will be their 5th, that included 2 derbies and a 20-hour trip to Japan) in 14 days!
It will be daunting challenge against Melbourne City, who boast a respectable home record 10/6/2 and are the competition's highest scoring side led by the league's top goalscorer Bruno Fornaroli and assist leader Aaron Mooy. There is further welcome news as striker Harry Novillo returns from a 2-match club ban. The attacking trio have combined well all season - 7/3/3 when playing together and just 2 wins out of 8 when at least one absent.
I can expect City to break down a wounded and weary Sydney FC comfortably.
