- Football - Greece - Super League
This is a derby as both teams are located in Athens. Atromitos Athenes is the team that came through the merge of Chalkidona and Atromitos. Chalkidona was a team with a rich president but no fans. For the past few years president Spanos tried to find a team with many fans in order to merge and get a team with many fans. The money was there and this summer the negotiations with Atromitos came to a happy end. So the new team kept the name, the colours (blue-white), the stadium and the emblem but with the board and coach of Chalkidona. Chalkidona is another team that followed the model of Aigaleo for the past few years. Chalkidona was a fascinating team with offensive and quality football but last year the team seemed to lose some of its power. Atromitos seems to be in a downtrend as the team hasnt won since the sixth weekend of the championship against Levadeiakos.
(11th round) Ionikos Atromitos : 3-1
(10th round) Atromitos Olympiakos : 0-1
(9th round) Larisa Atromitos : 2-1
(8th round) Atromitos Aigaleo : 0-0
(7th round) Iraklis Atromitos : 2-0
(6th round) Atromitos Levadeiakos : 1-0
The team shows inconsistency in the last rounds and last weekend in the derby against Ionikos (always a team that fights to avoid relegation), Atromitos totally surrendered to its opponent. So the team of Giorgos Parashos is in 10th place of the table and 6 points away from relegation zone. Atromitos has 2-2-2 at home with only 5-2 goals and 11-12 in total.
Panathinaikos on the other hand is a team that can play football at a high level but sometimes seems to have problems in creating chances. Coach Alberto Malesani has been criticized a few times so far but the board seems to trust the experienced Italian. Panathinaikos is in the 3rd place of the table ad can not afford to drop any more points as Olympiakos will step up and create a gap of 7 points. Right now the gap is 4 points so the greens have to get the best out of every game. Panathinaikos has 2-2-1 away from home with 7-6 goals and 17-9 in total. In fact Panathinaikos has the second best offensive line of the championship. Youngster striker Vaggelis Mantzios is the player to watch out for as he started the season as a replacement of Olisadebe, Torgele, Papadopoulos and Gegas but in the last rounds played so well that forced Malesani to consider him as a starter. For this game there are going to be fans of Panathinaikos in the stadium too. The atmosphere is going to be hot as the fans of Atromitos and Panathinaikos will pack the stadium.
Panathinaikos, after the defeat against Aek in the 7th round, has 4 consecutive wins.
Panathinaikos Paok : 1-0
Ofi Panathinaikos : 0-2
Panathinaikos Apollon Kalamarias : 3-0
Panathinaikos Skoda Xanthi : 2-1
Giorgos Parashos can not count on long term injured Korbos and Iliopoulos (a basic choice for the past two years or Parashos) and Francis Doe. There is good news too as Mikes and Karadimos are back from suspension).
Alberto Malesani on the other hand wont have Eki Gonzalez due to suspension. The Italian left Ceric (not ready yet), Olisadebe, Biscan and Sanmartean out of the team for this game.
Proable line-up (Panathinaikos) : Galinovic, Nilson (or Vyntra), Darlas, Morris, Goumas, Andric, Conseisao, Wooter, Haralabidis, Mantzios, Papadopoulos (or Gegas).
Chalkidona Panathinaikos (2005) : 0-2
Chalkidona Panathinaikos (2004) : 0-0
Atromitos wants to put an end to their winningless course in the championship but things are going to be difficult against Panathinaikos. I believe that Panathinaikos has more quality players that can win this kind of matches. I dont underestimate Atromitos but the team from Peristeri has to win games against teams like Ionikos if it wants to play a role in the championship and not be just a participant. Panathinaikos is already 4 points away from the top and can not afford to lose precious points. It is a big opportunity to take the 3 points against Atromitos that isnt convincing in the last rounds. Away win with medium stakes. Good luck to everybody !!!
